Radiators Cold at the Bottom

The classic sign of central heating sludge.

If your radiators are warm at the top but cold along the bottom, the usual cause is sludge, a build-up of black magnetite that settles inside the radiator and blocks the flow. Here is what it means, how to be sure, and what actually fixes it, because it is not always a power flush.

We diagnose first. Flush only where required. No pressure to flush Clear quote for the agreed work
The short answer

Radiators that are cold at the bottom but warm at the top almost always mean sludge has settled inside them. The more sludge across the system, the more radiators are affected. A single cold-bottom radiator can sometimes be cleared on its own, but when several are affected a power flush is usually the proper fix. We check the system first to be sure.

Why radiators go cold at the bottom

Inside a steel radiator, the system water slowly reacts with the metal to form iron oxide, better known as sludge or magnetite. Because it is heavier than water, it sinks and collects along the bottom of each radiator. That layer of sludge blocks hot water from reaching the lower section, so the top of the radiator heats up while the bottom stays stubbornly cold.

The more sludge there is in the system, the more radiators show the same pattern, and the harder your boiler and pump have to work to push heat around the house. Left long enough, it can also leave the system slow to warm up and the boiler noisy.

Engineer noteFeel the radiator about twenty minutes after the heating comes on. Warm across the top and cold along the bottom is the textbook sludge pattern. Cold at the top instead points to trapped air, which is a completely different and much smaller job.

One radiator or several? It matters

How many radiators are affected tells you how big the problem is. One cold-bottom radiator can be a local build-up that may clear with a targeted clean, or by removing and flushing that radiator on its own. Several radiators cold at the bottom point to sludge throughout the system, and that is when a full power flush usually makes sense. Either way, the black water that comes out when you bleed or drain a radiator confirms sludge is present.

If that one radiator is cold all over rather than just along the bottom, it is probably not sludge at all. A radiator that is cold top to bottom while every other one is hot usually points to its own valves. See one radiator not heating up.

A power flush is likely if

  • Several radiators are cold at the bottom, warm at the top.
  • Black or dark water comes out when you bleed them.
  • The system is slow to warm up across the house.
  • It is an older system that has never been cleaned.

It may be a smaller fix if

  • Only one radiator is affected and the rest heat well.
  • The water bleeds clear with no dark colour.
  • It only started after building work, which can be balancing.
  • The radiator is cold at the top, which is trapped air.

What we check before flushing

Confirm the pattern

Warm at the top, cold along the bottom, on which radiators.

Check how many

One radiator points local, several points system-wide.

Test the water

For sludge, corrosion and how far it has gone.

Recommend the right clean

A flush, a chemical clean, or a single-radiator fix.

We diagnose before we flush. If only one radiator is affected, the fix may be local and far cheaper than treating the whole system. If the system is only lightly affected, a gentler chemical clean may be enough. We recommend the right clean for your system, not a flush by default.

How to fix radiators that are cold at the bottom

If sludge is confirmed across the system, a power flush circulates cleaning chemicals at high flow to lift it out of every radiator and the pipework, then refills with clean water and a corrosion inhibitor so it does not come straight back. You can read exactly how that works on our power flushing in London page.

For a single radiator, it can sometimes be removed and flushed separately, and a magnetic filter fitted afterwards catches future magnetite before it settles. What it costs depends on the number of radiators and the condition of the system, so see what affects your price, or send a photo of the water for a clear quote.

Radiators cold at the bottom, answered

Are radiators cold at the bottom always sludge?
Almost always, when the top is warm and the bottom is cold. That pattern is caused by sludge settling in the base of the radiator. Cold at the top instead means trapped air, which simply needs bleeding.
Can I fix a cold-bottom radiator myself?
Bleeding will not help, because the problem is sludge at the bottom rather than air at the top. A single radiator can sometimes be taken off and flushed, but a system full of sludge needs a proper clean. We can tell you what is realistic for your setup.
Will bleeding the radiator help?
No. Bleeding releases trapped air from the top of a radiator. Sludge sits at the bottom, so bleeding makes no difference to a radiator that is cold along the bottom.
How many cold radiators mean I need a power flush?
There is no fixed number, but the more radiators that are cold at the bottom, the more likely it is sludge across the whole system, which is what a power flush clears. One affected radiator is often a smaller, local fix, and if it is cold all over rather than just along the bottom it is usually a valve. See one radiator not heating up.
Could it be the boiler or pump instead?
It can. Poor circulation from a tired pump or a fault can look like sludge. That is why we check the whole system rather than assuming, so you do not pay for a flush you do not need.
Does black water when I bleed confirm sludge?
Yes. Dark grey or black water is corroded iron oxide, the sludge that leaves radiators cold at the bottom. Clear water is a good sign.

Cold at the bottom? Let us confirm the cause.

Send a photo and your symptoms, and we will tell you honestly whether it is sludge and give a clear quote, with no pressure to flush if it is not the right fix.

Power Flush London were very professional. The engineer explained the issue clearly, protected the work area and carried out the job carefully. They left my home as clean and tidy as it was when they arrived. The all the radiators feels much more hotter to the touch now. Looking forward to see how it performs in the coming winter months.
