Boiler Kettling and Noisy Heating
That rumble should be checked before it gets worse.
Boiler kettling, that rumble or whistle from the boiler, along with banging, knocking or gurgling radiators, is telling you something. Common causes include limescale, sludge, trapped air or a boiler-side fault, so the right fix depends on what is actually going on. Here is what the different noises mean, and what actually quietens them.
Boiler kettling is the rumbling, kettle-like noise a boiler makes when limescale and sludge build up on its heat exchanger, so water overheats and boils. Banging, knocking or gurgling around the system usually points to sludge restricting the flow or to trapped air. The fix depends on the cause: often a clean helps, sometimes a bleed, and occasionally it is a boiler fault. We check before recommending anything.
What boiler kettling and noises mean
Kettling gets its name for a reason: it is the sound of water boiling and turning to steam where it should be flowing smoothly. It happens when limescale and sludge coat the boiler’s heat exchanger, creating hot spots that overheat the water. Parts of London have harder water, which leaves more limescale, and combined with sludge from a corroding system it is a common cause of a noisy boiler.
Other noises tell their own story. Banging and knocking in the pipework often mean sludge is restricting the flow, so water moves unevenly. Gurgling is usually trapped air. A system that is both noisy and slow, with radiators cold at the bottom, points firmly towards sludge throughout.
Engineer noteKettling and banging are the system asking for help. Left alone, the sludge and scale that cause them make the boiler work harder and wear faster, so it is worth finding the cause rather than turning the heating up to drown out the noise.
Noisy because of the system, or the boiler?
Most noisy-heating complaints come from sludge and scale in the system, which cleaning addresses. Some come from the boiler or a part, which it will not. Here is roughly how it splits.
Likely the system, a clean may help
- Kettling or rumbling, with an older or dirty system.
- Banging or knocking pipes and slow heating.
- Black water and radiators cold at the bottom.
- The system has never been cleaned.
Likely smaller, or a boiler fault
- Gurgling only, which is usually trapped air.
- Noise from the boiler with clean, healthy water.
- A recent fault or change after boiler work.
- One radiator ticking as it heats and cools.
What we check before recommending a clean
Listen to the noise
Kettling, banging or gurgling each point a different way.
Test the water
For sludge and corrosion, and check the radiators.
Check the boiler side
To see whether the noise is the system or the boiler.
Recommend the right fix
A clean, a bleed, or a referral for a boiler fault.
If sludge and scale are behind the noise, a power flush or a gentler chemical clean usually quietens things by clearing the build-up and restoring flow, and adding a corrosion inhibitor helps keep it that way. If the noise is coming from the boiler itself, we will tell you, because a flush will not fix a boiler fault. See what affects the price, or send us a recording or description of the noise for a clear quote.
