Common Central Heating Problems
Find the cause before you pay for the wrong fix.
Most central heating problems, from cold radiators and dirty water to a noisy boiler or heating that is slow to warm up, trace back to a handful of causes: sludge, trapped air, balancing or a fault. Pick the symptom that matches yours below to understand what is likely going on, then we can diagnose it properly and recommend the right fix.
Most central heating problems come down to sludge restricting the flow, trapped air, radiators that need balancing, or a fault in the boiler, pump or a valve. The symptom usually points to the cause, so choose yours below. Whatever it turns out to be, we diagnose first and only recommend a power flush when the system genuinely needs one.

The usual causes behind heating problems
Different symptoms point to different causes. Sludge, the black magnetite that builds up as a system corrodes, sinks and restricts the flow, which shows as radiators cold at the bottom, black water and a sluggish system. Trapped air rises and leaves radiators cold at the top, fixed by bleeding. Uneven heat, where some rooms are hot and others cool, is frequently a balancing problem rather than sludge. And some issues are a fault in the boiler, pump or a valve, which cleaning will not solve.
Telling these apart matters, because the fixes are completely different and so are the costs. That is the whole point of diagnosing first: a five-minute bleed, a balance, a clean or a repair are very different jobs, and you should only pay for the one your system actually needs.
Engineer noteThe symptom is the clue, not the diagnosis. Cold at the bottom points one way, cold at the top another, and a single cold radiator usually means something local rather than a whole-system problem. We confirm the cause before recommending anything.
Not sure which problem you have?
If your symptoms do not fit neatly into one box, that is normal. Our symptom checker gives you an honest first read in under a minute, or you can send us a photo of the water when you bleed a radiator and tell us what you have noticed. We will tell you what is likely going on and confirm a clear quote for any agreed work, with no pressure to flush if it is not the right fix. And if someone has already told you that you need a flush, it is worth reading when you do not need a power flush first.
